 | Wild Country Variable Controller
With slightly widened slots to give extra performance on single ropes, the Variable Controller has been adapted for 2006 to complement the arrival of the VC Pro.
This gives it an all round appeal and means it works better for sports and gyms as well as being a reliable partner for traditional double rope technique and absailing.
The Variable Controller is most suited for ropes from 9mm to 11mm rather than the more modern super skinny trad ropes where the new VC Pro pulls rank. The VC is better value in 2006 as well and so is a great intermediate choice for climbers maybe not heading for the most extreme challenges. Still light and in a stylish range of colours the VC remains a solid and reliable tool in any climbers armoury.

A true variable-friction device, the ATC-XP from Black Diamond maintains the silky-smooth feeding of the ATC but ups the braking power. For belaying and rappelling with 7.7-11 millimeter ropes, it’s designed with a smooth low friction side and a high friction side with v-shaped grooves for three times more friction. An extended central web keeps biners and ropes properly oriented and reduces kinking.

 | DMM V Twin Belay Device
The V Twin is DMM's new, premium belay device. It is made from stainless steel for durability and better heat dissipation. It stays a lot cooler on long abs when compared to it's aluminium counterparts.
DMM spent a long time playing around with the directional teeth in the body so that they allow you to easily control the friction without the side effects of the ropes sticking when you want to pay out quickly. This unit works well on all ropes from skinny 8.0s to fat 10.5s - as usual all the DMM office personnel were roped in to test this comprehensively at the local wall, however the prize goes to Mr. Desroy for taking repeated falls onto a (backed-up) new 8.0mm rope....
It uses the same nylon covered retaining wire as that used on the Bug because this has a proven history of good durability

Camp Shell

 | Camp Lotus Belay Kit
As climbing styles change and rope technology improves there is an increasing use of half/ twin ropes down to 7.6mm and single ropes as low as 9.1mm. The use of these thinner ropes has meant that some belay devices do not provide enough friction to effectively arrest a leader fall.
The Camp Lotus is cleverly designed to be versatile enough to cope with a wide range of ropes. With the flared end away from the belayers' body, rounded grooves in the mouth of the device provide enough friction for the climber to use ropes down to 7.6mm. Reverse the Lotus, with the flared end towards the belayers' body, and ropes up to 11mm can be used.
Similarly, abseiling can be safely undertaken by selecting the appropriate orientation of the Lotus according to the rope being used.
This is a complete belaying kit consisting of the Lotus belay device and the HMS Compact Bet Lock karabiner. Suitable for ropes from 7.6mm to 11mm.

 | Petzl Grigri
To belay a climber, you slide the rope smoothly through the GriGri. If the climber falls, the sudden pull makes the cam pivot, which presses on the rope and stops it running.
For lowering a partner off a climb using a Grigri, you operate the handle so as to unjam the rope and you control the running of the rope by varying your grip on the free end of the rope.
Although it gives greater safety, the Grigri is not a substitute for vigilance on the part of the belayer who must remain attentive to the climber at all times.
