Trekking in the Zillertal Alps
Allan Hartley
Located in the Austrian Tyrol of the eastern Alps, spanning the Austrian/Italian border, the Zillertal embraces stunning green valleys headed by scores of shapely peaks of rock and snow. The beauty of the Zillertal can not be overstated.
The classic Zillertal rucksack route is described, which traverses the very best of the range. It links together eight huts along good tracks without having to cross glaciers, providing a continuous tour of around ten to twelve days.
En route, there are plenty of opportunities to climb some of the peaks adjacent to the huts, which will appeal to those looking for a first Alpine season without the demands of the higher mountins of the Western Alps.
Whatever your aspirations the Zillertal will not disappoint you.

Trekking in the Stubai Alps
Allan Hartley
Of the many Alpine areas, few can match the Stubai in the Austrian Tyrol as a venue for a first Alpine season. Shapely peaks, good paths and some of the best huts in the Alps make it ideal for novices who want to extend their experience beyond Britain.
This book describes two celebrated tours, both of which are accomplished in eight to ten days:
The Stubai Rucksack Route- An ideal route for the mountain walker that links eight huts without crossing glaciers or difficult passes.
The Stubai Glacier Route- Known as the Hohen Weg, this tour takes in the best of the Stubai Alps; it is a hut-to-hut tourwhich crosses glaciers and offers ample opportunities for ascents of easy peaks.

Treks in the Dolomites
Martin Collins and Gillian Price
Alta Via 1 and 2 are the finest long-distance trails through the dolomites. Alta Via 1 is 120km long and requires up to 10 days; Alta Via 2 is 150km long, is generally higher and needs about 2.5 weeks.
Running north/south through the heart of the Dolomites, the two trails pass through a wide variety of landscape, from alpine meadows and foothills to the rugged heights of the central Dolomites.
Almost everywhere the terrain is stern. The walking varies from level strolling to via ferrata-style scrambling on fixed metal ropes, from ambling ascents in forests to steep traverses on snow and scree.
The hut system in the dolomites is perhaps the finest in the Alps, so accommodation is plentiful, good food is generally available, and there is always a welcome at the days end.
