Garhwal and Kumaon: A Trekker's and Visitors Guide
K.P. Sharma
Garhwal and Kumaon, known together as Uttarakhand, are the mountain regions of the Uttar Pradesh in India, bordering Nepal and Tibet. They are situated almost at the centre of the great Himalayan chain with more than 250 peaks above 5500m high.
Garhwal consists of a succession of steep mountain ridges divided from each other by deep, narrow glens. A traveller entering Garhwal from Kumaon is at once struck by the more rugged character of the scenery which is in contrast to the milder Kumaon hills.
This comprehensive guide not only covers the trekking but the history and societyof the region, flora and fauna, hill stations and temples.

Kangchenjunga A Trekkers Guide
At 28,169 ft (8586metres) Kangchenjunga in far north-eastern Nepal is the world's third highest peak. It's a huge spectaculer mountain with five tops and five glaciers dominating a spur from the main Himalayan axis. The trek to its base via the Nepalese foothills has been described quite simply as 'The Most Beautiful Walk in the World'.
This book is a guide to that trek. It describes the trails, villages and views, gives a potted history of some of the mountains, and adds background interest for anyone planning to visit the area. It's a sparsly populated region with a greater sense of isolation than in the more popular ares of Nepal. The trails are rougher, the facilities more primitive and the routes less well defined, offering a different kind of experience to that of the more mainstream routes and with an undisputed scenic grandeur for which Nepal is famous.
The author describes three possible approach routes and two link routes, with two main destinations, both in spectacular locations.

Annapurna A Trekkers Guide
Kev Reynolds
Seen from the lakeside town of Pokhara in central Nepal, a tremendous wall of snow and ice-capped mountains dominates the northern horizon; the Annapurna Himal. With no less than twelve summits topping 7000 metres (23,000ft) soaring above a foreground of intricately terraced foothills, this is one of the most beautiful and ethnically diverse landscapes on earth.
Around this impressive block goes the route of the classic Annapurna Circuit - one of the great walks of the world. Into the heart of these mountains another trekkers trail leads to the Annapurna Sanctuary. Through the world's deepest valley, between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri goes the Pilgrim's Trail to Muktinath.
Kev Reynolds describes each of these treks with full route details for 'tea-house' trekkers and those journeying with an organised group. Information with regard to lodges, tea-houses and villages is provided; there are sections on how to plan a trek, where and when to go, permits and preparations, health matters, and equipment checklists and, of equal importance, how to avoid giving offence to the local people. Outline suggestions are offered for other treks in the region, and details of 'Trekking Peaks' are also given.
